Congratulations to the Class of 2017

The Council would like to congratulate the Class of 2017 on the national pass rate of 75.1%, which is an improvement from the previous year and represents a consistent trend over the past few years of national results above 70%.

The Council would also like to commend the Department of Basic Education on its initiatives to improve teaching and learning in the public education system, such as its focus on equity; improved access to schooling; the Department’s Second Chance Programme and the inclusion of progressed learners in the number of learners enrolled for 2017.

The Department is also applauded for improvement in provincial results, particularly in the Eastern Cape, which recorded 65.8%, this is an increase of 2.5% from 2016.

Grade 12 signifies a momentous milestone that paves the way to lifelong learning and participation in the country’s social and economic transformation.

“The road to success is paved with pebbles of knowledge,
the brave gather theirs and fill their buckets, despite the few that escape through the fine holes,
still they journey on and are all the richer for it,
when at the end of the road,
the pebbles are scattered and ample to direct a new path,
as knowledge is infinite and a long winding road that leads to greatness,
the brave dare to take the first step …” BL

To the class of 2017, may you continue to strive for excellence and exhibit the same dedication displayed during the 13 years of foundation, primary and secondary learning, in your working lives.

We wish you well.
Issued by the General Secretary on behalf of the Executive Committee of the ELRC.
